Fishing and Crabbing: Lifeblood of the Community
Fishing has always been at the heart of Ozello’s survival and prosperity. The community became well known for its mullet fishing, which was both a food staple and a trade commodity. Fishermen cast their nets in the shallow estuaries and brought in catches that sustained families and supplied nearby towns.
Crabbing also emerged as a central industry, with blue crabs harvested in abundance from the surrounding marshes and tidal flats. Families often worked together, with children helping to set traps and clean crabs. The seafood was sold in nearby Crystal River or shipped to other markets, providing cash income for an otherwise subsistence economy.
Oystering added yet another dimension, with oyster beds along the coast serving as both food and a modest trade product. The collective reliance on the sea shaped not only the economy but also the cultural identity of Ozello’s residents.
Transportation Challenges: The Long Road to Connectivity
For much of its history, Ozello was only accessible by water. Settlers used small boats to travel to Crystal River, which served as the primary hub for supplies, schools, and medical services. In the early 20th century, demand grew for a road to connect Ozello with the rest of Citrus County.
